OUR MISSION STATEMENT

“WE, THE PEOPLE OF ST. PETER’S/SACRED HEART PARISH,

SEEK TO GROW IN THE HOLY SPIRIT AND EMPOWER EACH OTHER IN DOING GOD’S WORK.”

A JOYOUS AND BLESSED EASTER TO ALL!

HE IS RISEN!

The resurrection of Jesus from the dead demonstrates God’s ultimate power over all other forces, including death.

By his resurrection, Jesus opens the door of eternity to all believers. The mystery of redemption, first intimated at the incarnation, reaches its purpose in the resurrection. Belief in the resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith. Today concludes the celebration of the Triduum and begins the great Fifty Days. The Church in her wisdom gives us forty days of fasting, but fifty days of feasting. This tells us something important about the Christian faith: it is more about joy than about sorrow. The victory of the Resurrection surpasses the power of sin. Christ has not just won the battle. He has vanquished the foe. The gift of Christ outweighs the offense of Adam, and overflows so much that the scales henceforth are always tipped in favor of humanity. A sense of paschal abundance is at the heart of the Eucharistic sacrifice at all times, but especially at Easter. Like the feast that welcomes home the prodigal son, The Eucharistic banquet is more than we deserve, yet it is freely offered by our loving Father, who is ecstatic at his children’s return. Christ’s Passion, death, and Resurrection have won us back. A new life opens before us. Enter into the spirit of the Easter Alleluia and keep it going for a full fifty days.  (Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons 2005/2006 @ 2005 Archdiocese of Chicago)

ALLELUIA!

Alleluia! Our praise word has been silent for forty days. Alleluia means “Praise Ye, Lord,” and we sing it out in joyful trinities today. Praise is as common to our liturgical life as petition, but we tend to overlook it. The Eucharistic prayer at the heart of the Mass is a prayer of praise and thanksgiving, which teaches us something about the order of such prayer. Praising God is naturally followed by litanies of reasons flowing from grateful hearts. Our responsorial psalms, interspersed throughout the Easter Vigil and sung at every Mass, dance with the opportunity to give praise to the One who keeps all promises. Alleluia! (Alice L. Camille @ 1997 Oregon Catholic Press. All rights reserved.)

“Christ Jesus was not indifferent to “the splendor of the lilies of the field.” (Matthew 6:28.) Humble and fragile though they are, the flowers and greens of the earth can be counted among the resources of the praying Church, expressing wonder and adoration in God’s presence. (Sourcebook for Sundays and Season 2006 @ 2005 Archdiocese of Chicago) THE EASTER FLOWER MEMORIAL has been prepared and placed at all of church entrances. Thank you to all who have memorialized a loved one and contributed to the careful preparation of the “large upper room” (Mark 14:15, Luke 22:12) commanded by Jesus before the Last Supper.

THE GREAT THREE DAYS -- EASTER TRIDUUM

HOLY THURSDAY, April 13 – Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper and Procession – 7:00PM at St. Peter’s. We commemorate the institution of the Eucharist and priesthood and the ministry of service at this liturgy and conclude with a solemn procession with the Holy Eucharist. Families are encouraged to bring their Operation Rice Bowl and Local Food Pantry donations to the liturgy that evening and place them in the proper receptacles at the Church entrance.

Eucharistic Adoration & Night Prayer: The Blessed Sacrament will be reserved in the

Eucharistic Chapel (room off the carport entrance of the Church) until midnight for silent devotion.

Please take time to watch and pray with the Lord. We will conclude Adoration with Night Prayer at Midnight.

GOOD FRIDAY, April 14 – Celebration of the Lord’s Passion – 12:10PM at St. Peter’s. (A day of fast and abstinence.) We will observe this day with the gospel of Christ’s Passion, veneration of the cross and Holy Communion. Paschal Fast: on Good Friday, and if possible, Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil, the paschal fast is observed everywhere in honor of the suffering and death of the Lord, Jesus, to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in his resurrection. (Paulist Press Ordo.)  Stations of the Cross will be prayed at Sacred Heart Church in Morris at 7:00PM, followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Blessing of Easter Baskets - Saturday, April 15, at 12:00PM (Noon) in the Parish Center.

SATURDAY, APRIL 15 – EASTER VIGIL – The High Point of the Easter Triduum – 8:00PM at St. Peter’s. Here the Liturgies of Light, Word, Baptism, and Eucharist celebrate the risen Lord in our lives and we welcome several new members into our community of faith. Floyd Snyder will celebrate the gift of new life in Baptism and Charles and Mary Fagg will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. Come help us welcome them and in turn be renewed in your own faith, at the Night-Watch of the Resurrection.

Easter Vigil Reception: Parishioners are invited to gather immediately following

our celebration in the Parish Center to welcome the newly-initiated into our faith community.

The Catholic Church Teaches

The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:25). Ceaselessly, the Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance the life-giving words of Jesus: “This is my body which is given for you” (Luke 22:19).  In the Eucharistic Prayer, while giving thanks to the Father, the Church “implores the power of the Holy Spirit that the gifts offered by human hands be consecrated, that is, become Christ’s Body and Blood” (GIRM, 79). The Church also prays that, by the action of the Holy Spirit, “the spotless Victim to be received in Communion be for the salvation of those who will partake of it” (GIRM, 79).  At the Annunciation (cf. Luke 1:35) the Holy Spirit overshadowed the Virgin Mary, forming the Body of Christ in her womb. At Pentecost (cf. Acts 2:4) the Holy Spirit was present in a mighty wind and tongues of fire to form the body of Christ, the Church. In every Mass the Holy Spirit makes fruitful the Church’s obedience to the command of Christ: “Do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19). (Father Mark-Daniel Kirby, OCIST, PHD.
