EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the Pastor: Contrasting Kingdom Talk

Jesus’ encounter with the anxious heir presents a vivid contract between the values of the Kingdom of God and the values of the kingdom of this world. In the kingdom of the world the operative words are - 401K, IRS, IRA, save, store up, stock exchange, financial security. The contrasting language of the Kingdom of God is - 8:34 (Mark’s gospel that is – look it up!), I.H.S. (In this Sign of the Cross), INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), lose (for Christ’s sake), let go (Sermon on the Mount), true riches (read Matthew 6:19-34).

Most of us are "bilingual", speaking the language and living the culture of both Kingdoms. That’s understandable, given the overpowering presence of the worldly kingdom. However, there does come a time. . . . . when we need to decide which kingdom is first in our lives. How can we help each other to choose the Kingdom of God?

Please welcome Fr. Julian Cassar, Assistant Pastor of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Pleasant Valley, New York (Parish of Fr. Mike’s brother, Kevin and his family). Fr. Julian has exchanged pulpits with Fr. Sullivan this weekend to preside at the Masses. Fr. Sullivan will return from New York Monday evening.

ATTENTION ALL MINISTERS OF THE ALTAR! The new schedule is available this weekend in the sacristy. Please be sure to pick yours up and return the information sheet by September 1^st. Please also take special note of the "Night of Reflection" announced on the other side of this bulletin. The evening is open to all parishioners, but especially meant as an opportunity of renewal for all Ministers of the Altar.

BAPTISM! Next Saturday at 1:00PM, we welcome David Phillip Maslar, son of John and Allison Fitzpatrick Maslar, into our Christian community through the waters of rebirth.

RENEWAL OF VOWS! Next Sunday during the 11:00AM Mass, Henry and Helena Kaminski will renew their marriage vows in honor of their 50^th Wedding Anniversary. Our prayers and congratulations to them as they continue to live this Sacrament of love.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TRAVEL TO ST. ANTHONY’S SOUP KITCHEN! On the second Friday of each month, volunteers from our parish travel to St. Anthony’s Center in Williamsport to prepare and serve meals to poor and homeless persons there. Consider committing to just one trip. Interested individuals are asked to call Joanne Dinnison (Rectory: 570-724-3371) or the Rectory (724-3371) during regular business hours.

St. Peter’s Closet has a variety of religious articles available and is open following the weekend Masses for your convenience. St. Peter’s Video and Audio Library is located in the Parish Office. Video’s and cassettes can be signed out and returned throughout the week during regular office hours. Office Hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00AM - 12:00 (Noon); 1:00PM - 3:00PM. NIGHT OF REFLECTION –

FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2001

All parishioners are invited to join us for an evening of renewal through prayer, information, and sharing. Guest Facilitator: Lynn Busch, O.C.V., Coordinator of the Pastoral Formation Institute in Dalton, PA. We will gather at 6:30PM in the Parish Center for fellowship and close the evening with the celebration of Mass at 8:30PM. All Ministers of the Altar – Lectors, Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers and members of the Music Ministry are urged to make a special effort to attend. Questions? ST. PETER’S CONFIRMATION RETREAT - SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2001

All confirmation candidates are expected to attend this day of prayerful activities in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Spring of 2002. Brian Williams, a noted Diocesan Youth Minister will facilitate the day…so come with a WILLING SPIRIT AND A PRAYERFUL HEART. Retreat – 8:45AM – 12:00 (Noon); Lunch – 12:00 (Noon) – 12:45PM; Mass – 1:00PM – 2:00PM. Parents are encouraged to join us for the celebration of the Mass.

INQUIRY SESSIONS (R.C.I.A.) - The Inquiry Sessions begin in September and are held Monday evenings at 7:00PM in the Parish Center. These sessions are for people of other faiths who have an interest in the Catholic faith and for adult Catholics seeking First Communion and/or Confirmation. This phase of the R.C.I.A. process does not require any commitment. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Sullivan.

The Tioga Deanery of Catholic Churches will sponsor an INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON ANNULMENTS on Sun., Sept. 9^th from 2:00PM – 4:00PM at Holy Child Hall in Mansfield. There are many divorced Catholics who have questions about the annulment procedure. You are invited to come and have your questions answered. A representative of the Diocesan Tribunal will be the presenter for this meeting. We need to know how many will attend. If you are interested, please contact the Parish Office and leave your name.

RENEW 2000 . . .

Do you know someone who is no longer part of our parish community.

If so, begin to pray and think of ways you can invite that person to be a part of our celebration of the third millennium. As we prepare for our celebration, we want to reach out to as many people as possible. Think of young people who may not look to the church to help them find meaning in their lives. Think of those who may be angry with the church. Reach out to them because we want everyone to be a part of this great celebration. Beginning in September, we will begin with a Mission to be held on two consecutive evenings (Sept. 16 & 17 – 7:00PM – 8:30PM both evenings) here at the church. Bring along as many people as you can. We want to reach out to everyone and move together as a human family toward greater unity and reconciliation.
