TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the Pastor: Connections

The recent tragic events in New York, Washington, and Pittsburgh are occupying our minds, hearts and conversations these days. People are looking at almost every aspect of their personal lives in reference to this national crisis. We are able more readily to find connections to these events in the Word of God.

St. Paul, for instance, in writing to Timothy asks for "supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgiving for everyone . . . . and for all in authority."  All around the country the faithful are gathering in planned and spontaneous prayer. How wonderful that is, and how necessary! Praying for our leaders at this time is so important.

Jesus today reminds us to choose God over wealth and possessions. We have learned painfully how fleeting are the things of this world. What is more precious is not what can be bought, but with whom we can find and offer comfort and support, beginning with God and those who love us.

Fr. Sullivan will be away this week.  In the event of an emergency, please contact the Parish Office (724-3371) during regular office hours. After hours, call Fr. Joe Kutch, Mansfield (662-3568), or Fr. Rick Fox, Blossburg (638-3241).

THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to last weekend’s second collection for the victims of the recent disaster.  A total of $3,105.70 has been forwarded to the Diocese of Scranton.

RENEW 2000 -- FINAL SIGN-UP!  Sign-up for a small community this weekend by using the forms provided at the Church entrances. Groups will meet once a week for six weeks beginning Sunday, October 7th.

DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL- A NEW NAME, TAKE A NEW LOOK!  The Diocesan Annual Appeal, formerly the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, supports a number of Diocesan ministries and programs.  Please read the attachment to today’s bulletin. All parishioners are encouraged to take a new look at this important campaign and to prayerfully consider a generous pledge, payable over five months (Jan. 2002 – May 2002). Your commitment will help our parish meet its 2001 Annual Appeal Goal of $18,251.00.  Some of our registered parishioners received a mailing from Bishop Timlin last week and others will receive theirs this week. If you do receive a letter, please complete the enclosed pledge form and return it to the Diocese.

DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL- COMMITMENT WEEKEND!

Next weekend at all of the Masses, one person from each household will be asked to complete a pledge card.  If you have given by mail or cannot give at this time, you can mark the cards accordingly.  Please take some time this week to decide which member of the household will complete the pledge form at Mass and how much will be pledged.

BAPTISMS! Next Sunday after the 11:00AM Mass, we welcome into the Christian community, Catherine Kelly Craig, daughter of Francis, Jr. and Kathleen (Lynch) Craig; and Hannah Elizabeth Krystoff, daughter of Anthony and Jennifer (Perez) Krystoff.  We joyfully initiate them into the Body of Christ through the waters of rebirth.

LIFELINE!  Whenever there is a lost consciousness of the fact that every man is an object of concern for us just because he is man, civilization and morals are shaken, and the advance to fully developed inhumanity is only a matter of time. (Albert Schweitzer, MD)

"THE DEATH PENALTY: CHOOSE LIFE" "Increasingly, our society looks to violent measures to deal with some of our most difficult social problems…Violence is not the solution, it is the most clear sign of our failures."  (Confronting a Culture of Violence, National Conference of Catholic Bishops)
