Acts of God
"… after the fire a sound of sheer silence." (1 King19:9, 11-13)
There's a phrase insurance policies use for a natural disaster. It's called an "act of God." It's a little unfair to libel God as the originator of deeds of destruction. Even so, when the forces of nature reveal their strength, people become aware of their weaknesses and meditate on the power of God.
But when people go in search of God, they rarely go to the place of an earthquake, a fire, or a tornado. They go to a quiet place. They watch the sunrise. They visit a wayside chapel. They sit by the ocean. They find God's majestic voice in whispers of peace.
When Elijah fled the murderous Queen Jezebel, he eventually found himself in a cave on the mountain of God, Horeb. There he witnessed God passing by. Not in the strong wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, did Elijah behold God's presence, but in a tiny whispering sound. You can't help but love this story!
Noise fills much of our day. The radio or television breaks the morning silence. Background music filters through elevators and grocery stores. Our windows cannot block out the cacophony of traffic.
It may not take an act of God for us to be able to find God. It may just take quiet space. (Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2001, Archdiocese of Chicago, Liturgy Training Publications; 1-800-933-1800;

- Widespread acceptance of cloning would be a deathblow to the sanctity/equality of life ethic - the cornerstone of Western liberty from which sprang our unrealized dream of universal human rights. The premise of the sanctity of life ethic is that each and every one of us is of equal, incalculable, moral worth. Whatever our race, sex, ethnicity, stature, health, disability, age, beauty or cognitive capacity we are all full moral equals within the human community - there is no "them," only "us." - Wesley J. www.masstimes.org"Prayer and worship says to God, 'You are Lord of me, my life and my choices.' Pro-choice says, 'I am the Lord of me, my life and my choices.' Many people today say, 'This is my life, my body, my choice.' But we are not our own masters. We belong to God. 'Nobody lives as his own master and nobody dies as his own master' (Rom. 14:7) 'You are not your own' (1Cor. 6:19). The choice to be a mother or father is not merely a human choice. It is God's choice first." - Fr. Frank Pavone, Cofounder of Priests for Life.
Please pray for our sick and their caregivers.
